cavalier profile Chris Canty Alum • Football Defensive lineman Chris Canty had a solid performance in his first game with the Baltimore Ravens, recording a sack, two tackles and three quarterback hits in what was an otherwise poor defensive performance against the Denver Broncos in a 49-27 loss Sept. 5. In the home opener against the Cleveland Browns Sept. 15, however, the former UVa standout suffered a groin injury in the first half on a day the Ravens raised their Super Bowl banner. "I knew something was wrong. I came to the sidelines and the doctor looked at it," said Canty, who signed with the Ravens after four years with the Dallas Cowboys from 2005-08 and four years with the New York Giants from 2009‑12. Dealing with injuries is nothing new for the 6-7, 317-pound Canty, who was drafted out of Virginia by the Cowboys in the fourth round in 2005. He played in just eight games in 2009 with the Cowboys and saw action in nine games, all starts, with the Giants in 2012. "I have been in this situation before," said Canty, who recorded 272 tackles and 19 sacks during his first eight professional seasons. "I will try to get into the best physical shape I can and try to help the team win." He returned to action in a 23-20 loss at Buffalo Sept. 29 and made five tackles. Through Nov. 4, Canty had played in seven of Baltimore's first eight contests and made six starts. He compiled 15 tackles (12 solo), two sacks and two forced fumbles for the 3-5 Ravens. Canty landed with Baltimore because the Ravens wanted some extra line protection to back All-Pro Haloti Ngata and because he wanted to play for a contender. Despite the Ravens' slow start, Canty believes they have a chance to repeat last year's special season. "It's a team with the ability to win another championship," Canty said. "I want to win another Super Bowl before my career is over." — David Driver ◆ Photo courtesy Baltimore Ravens i28.CP-Chris Canty.indd 53 11/5/13 1:50 PM
