◆ Dec. 31, 1984 — The Cavaliers played in their
first-ever bowl game and recorded a 27‑24 win over
Purdue in the Peach Bowl.
◆ Dec. 22, 1979 — Hall of Fame center Ralph
Sampson set the single-game school record with 12
blocks in No. 12 UVa's 84‑60 win over Army.
◆ Dec. 11, 1971 — Two-time All-American guard
Barry Parkhill tallied a program-record 51 points
in a 117-83 victory over Baldwin-Wallace. The win
propelled the Cavs into the national rankings at No.
19, and they would finish the year ranked for the
first time in school history (No. 20), while Parkhill —
who is now the school's associate athletics director
for development — went on to earn Virginia's first
ACC Basketball Player of the Year honor.
