Harris was one of five players named to the preseason All-ACC squad and is a strong candidate for the league's player of the year award. Photo by matt riley/courtesy UVa athletes, who are in the student body, and that's what I love. They've really taken and drank in the whole experience of what UVa has to offer. "And then they've worked hard to improve their games," Bennett continued. "They've fought through injuries and all sorts of stuff and they're coming into their senior years with hope and excitement and an opportunity to take the next step. That's what I envision when I see guys i17-19.Joe Harris.indd 4 sticking it out for four years." Harris has been involved with several student organizations during his time at UVa, including SAC (Student Athlete Council), IMP Society and ACE (Athletes Committed to Community and Education). Harris said he has treasured his college experience. "I can't even imagine going to any school besides UVa," he said. "I'm really happy that I made the decision to come here. It's an amazing school and I've met a lot of amazing people who I've been fortunate enough to get to know. I've made a lot of really good friends in my four years here that are outside of basketball and athletics. "All in all, I'm very fortunate and grateful to go to a school like UVa and live in a place like Charlottesville." After college, Harris will pursue the next goal that is scrawled on his bedroom ceiling: "Become a pro." By all accounts, he has a pretty good chance at accomplishing it. Jonathan Givony, the owner of Draft Express, recently told The Daily Progress that a lot of NBA teams like Harris. "I know a couple who think he has a really good chance of getting drafted, just because he has very good size for a wing player and he's one of the best shooters in college basketball," Givony said. "He's become much more versatile. "As his career has moved on, he's relied less and less on the three-point shot and has been able to get to the free throw line and his passing ability has improved … I think he'll definitely be in the mix." Of course, an NBA career is the last thing the team-oriented Harris is thinking about right now.
"All that stuff in the future, that will take care of itself as long as we do well as a team this season," he said. ◆ 11/5/13 2:19 PM
