BYU game notes A Breakout Night For Jarron Jones Sophomore defensive lineman Jarron Jones started in place of senior nose guard Louis Nix III, who underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus earlier in the week, and broke out with a performance that caught the attention of teammates and coaches. "It might've been toward the end of the game I was looking up at the scoreboard, and I just see [fifth-year senior linebacker Dan] Fox eight tackles, Jones seven … and I'm like [senior wide receiver] TJ Jones? No. Oh, Jarron," fifth-year senior guard Chris Watt said. "Wow, I didn't know he had seven at that point. That's good when we have younger guys stepping up for this program, especially going into next year." Red Zone EffIciency (Inside 20-Yard Line) No Poss. Head coach Brian Kelly mentioned a few weeks ago that Jones might play primarily at nose guard next year, and the effort versus BYU showed evidence that such a transition could work. "Jarron, we felt like was coming on. He played exceedingly well, and we're really happy for him," Kelly said. "We thought this was something that he was capable of when we recruited him, and he showed that today." The coaching staff moved Jones to the scout team during the team's first bye week after a 37-34 win against Arizona State Oct. 5 in what Jones calls a "humbling" ordeal. He said it motivated him to improve his work ethic and enter the Irish defensive rotation. "I'm not saying the scout team is a bad thing, but it's just something I don't want to do," Jones said.
