Who Makes The Calls?
Head coach Brian Kelly indicated in the spring that he was turning over
play-calling duties to offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Chuck Martin this year. There has been some skepticism about that being the case with
Kelly holding the "call sheet" throughout the game while Martin is in the
press box.
Kelly maintained Martin is making the calls predicated on the plan of attack
outlined throughout the week.
"If I don't like the play, we're not running the play, that's pretty clear — but
that's not the way to run a game," Kelly said. "If you're vetoing every other
play you just might as well call the plays. I've never wanted to operate under
that."
Kelly's primary input comes when he communicates with Martin while the
Irish defense is on the field.
"I have a way that I want the game to flow," Kelly said. "We've got time
to talk in between series, so that's really the communication between Chuck
and me."
