He had the assist when the Irish tied then-No. 1 North Carolina early in the season. "I love to compete," he said. "I love to play in the biggest games possible. I think that's one of my biggest strong suits is stepping up in those big games and those challenges." The biggest moments lie ahead for Shipp, who said this year's team is built for a deep run in the postseason. Notre Dame entered the tournament as the country's top team a year ago, but was upset by Indiana., Shipp said the No. 3 Irish set their sights back in August on making sure that doesn't happen again. "We thought the only rational way to build on what we did the year before was postseason tournament success," he said. "That's what we really put our focus on." Notre Dame met Wake Forest Dec. 1 in the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament. ✦ Irish Roundup Hockey (8-5-1 overall, 2-3-1 Hockey East) No. 11 Notre Dame dropped below .500 in Hockey East play with back-to-back losses to UMass-Lowell on the road Nov. 22-23. The injury-ravaged Irish lineup managed only one goal during the weekend in 1-0 and 3-1 losses. The Irish took a break from conference play during Thanksgiving weekend, but will host UMass Dec. 6-7. Women's Basketball (5-0) The fifth-ranked Irish stayed undefeated heading into the Thanksgiving break by beating former Big East foe DePaul 92-76 Nov. 26. Senior Natalie Achonwa led a balanced offensive attack with 17 points and eight rebounds. All five Notre Dame starters finished with double digits in points to help the team top 90 points for the third time this season. Women's Soccer (13-8-1, 7-5-1 ACC) Notre Dame's season came to an end with a 1-0 loss to Michigan during the third round of the NCAA Tournament Nov. 24. The Wolverines' lone goal came on a penalty kick early in the second half. The Irish managed only three second-half shots while missing a player due to a red card. They beat Iowa 4-1 and Western Michigan 1-0 to reach the third round. Volleyball (12-17, 6-12 ACC) The Irish women won a game and lost a game while hosting a recent pair of visitors from the Old Dominion state. They beat Virginia Tech 3-1 Nov. 20 before losing in a 3-0 sweep to Virginia Nov. 22. Notre Dame finished its first ACC season at home against Syracuse Nov. 30. — Dan Murphy
