fan forum — or when Notre Dame actually played and lost on Thanksgiving Day to Syracuse Nov. 28, 1963 — Notre Dame is 17-22-3 on Thanksgiving weekend. The reason we have only 42 games out of those 51 from 19632013 is in nine of those years Notre Dame had a bye that weekend, or its regular season had already ended. We can give one major reason for the problems on Thanksgiving weekend: great competition. In even-numbered years Notre Dame has played at USC, and you're well aware what a House of Horrors the Los Angeles Coliseum has been over the decades. In odd-numbered years, Stanford has been anywhere from decent to powerful the past 20 years, and Miami was a juggernaut in the 1980s. Warmweather sites are the preferred destination that weekend. Also, almost all the games are on the road on Thanksgiving weekend. An exception was the 1973 national champs, who beat Air Force 48-15 on Thanksgiving Day in Notre Dame Stadium. Godot — QB Golson Estragon: "Let's go." Vladimir: "We can't." Estragon: "Why not?" Vladimir: "We're waiting for Godot." Estragon (despairingly): "Ah!" Don't know if Coach Kelly still has visions of the NFL dancing in his head — however, it would be prudent to wait for Golson. The similarity was too striking to ignore. How apropos we are now in Advent — the season of waiting. Matt Hart Trenton, Mich. Waiting For Golson The 2013 Notre Dame football season from beginning to end was a version of Samuel Beckett's Waiting For Godot, with the characters being: Vladimir — Coach Kelly Estragon — Coach Martin be heard!
