Notre Dame split a pair of games with UMass, a 5-3 win and a 3-2 loss, during the first full weekend of December. It was the sixth time in the last seven weeks that Jeff Jackson's team lost at least one game during a weekend series. A trio of offensive threats returned to the Irish lineup against the Minutemen after missing most of the last month, but it wasn't enough to sweep the Hockey East cellar dweller. Sophomore Mario Lucia, boosted by the return of freshman line mate Vinnie Hinostroza, had three goals in the two games. Two of them were assisted by Hinostroza. Notre Dame doesn't play again until Jan. 4 when it faces No. 9 Boston College in Boston's Fenway Park, the program's second outdoor game. Track & Field The indoor track season started on a high note for the Irish, who claimed first place in 25 of 33 events at the annual Blue & Gold Invitational Dec. 6. Senior Patrick Feeney beat junior training partner Chris Giesting by three-hundredths of a second to win the 400-meter dash. The women also took the top two spots in the 400, with sophomore Margaret Bamgbose crossing the line a step before senior Michelle Brown. The Irish women dominated the distance events, taking first place in the 500-, 800- and 3,000-meter
