MLB Notes Through Dec. 9 • Former Notre Dame reliever John Axford is a free agent after helping the St. Louis Cardinals reach the World Series in October. The Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles were reportedly among the teams interested in Axford heading into MLB's winter meetings Dec. 9-12. • Former Irish pitcher and wide receiver Jeff Samardzija is on the trading block after a solid season as the Chicago Cubs' No. 1 starter.
