INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MICHIGAN'S TOP OLYMPIC SPORTS PERFORMERS Wrestling fifth-year senior Dan Yates: With an 8-4 decision against Purdue's Chad Welch Jan. 10, Yates improved to 105-41 in his career to move into 29th place all time among Wolverines in victories. Ranked seventh in the 165-pound weight class, Yates has added two more victories, over competitors from Illinois and Minnesota, and was 13-2 this season and 8-1 in duals through Jan. 21. He needs 10 more wins to rank in the top 20 for career victories at Michigan. Women's gymnastics senior Joanna Sampson: Scoring a 39.625 to claim the all-around title in Michigan's quad-meet with North Carolina State, North Carolina and Towson Jan. 17, Sampson recorded a score of 39.000 or better for the 22nd time in her fouryear career, moving the Willow Grove, Pa., native into 10th place. She needs one more score of 39.000 to take over ninth place. Sampson's victory in the all-around was the 14th of her career. She also had 38 individual event titles through Jan. 21. Women's swimming and diving sophomore Ali DeLoof: The Grosse Pointe, Mich., native scored a pair of individual event wins when the Maize and Blue battled Northwestern and Notre Dame Jan. 11. DeLoof touched the wall in first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a career-best time of 50.13 seconds and then took first in the 100-yard backstroke (53.85 seconds). Three times a Big Ten Swimmer of the Week this season, DeLoof has won six individual races through Jan. 21. Men's swimming and diving junior Richard Funk: The Edmonton, Alberta, native helped lead No. 1 Michigan to a first-place finish among six teams at the SMU Classic Jan. 17-18. Funk began his meet with a poolrecord time of 52.31 seconds to claim the 100-yard breaststroke title — the nation's second-fastest time in that event this season — and continued on day two with a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke, clocking 1:54.75.
