with Kentucky and James Blackmon signs with Indiana. Nov. 2: In its most humbling loss yet to Michigan State over the past six years, Michigan yields seven sacks and 11 tackles for loss, and finishes with minus-48 yards rushing, while getting crushed 29-6. Nov. 9: Perhaps suffering a Michigan State hangover, the Wolverines generate just 175 yards of offense and lose their second straight and third in four games, in a 17-13 defeat to Nebraska. Nov. 14: Ready for some good news, and confident they are in position to land Da'Shawn Hand, the Maize and Blue watch in horror while the nation's No. 1 recruit announces live on national television he will be attending Alabama. Nov. 23: Michigan's offense collapses in the second half at Iowa, netting just 35 total yards on six possessions when Iowa outscores the Maize and Blue 17-0 to rally for a 24-21 win over U-M. Nov. 30: In a game that shocks the nation, Michigan goes toe-to-toe with No. 2 Ohio State and appears set to tie the game at 42 apiece with 32 seconds left. However, U-M goes for two (the right call) but comes up short and loses 42-41 to the Buckeyes, dropping its regular-season record to 7-5. To make matters worse, quarterback Devin Gardner suffers a left foot injury that ultimately keeps him out of Michigan's bowl game. Dec. 3: In a hyped Big Ten/ACC matchup, Michigan basketball gets throttled by No. 10 Duke, trailing by as many as 18 before losing 79-69. Dec. 7: Michigan fans' worst nightmare comes true when Michigan State and Ohio State battle it out in the Big Ten Championship Game. MSU wins to punch its ticket to Pasadena while OSU accepts a BCS bowl bid. Dec. 16: In a game it led throughout, including a 37-28 halftime margin, Michigan falls behind Arizona 63-62 with 2:32 remaining. After trading buckets and the lead, U-M sees a phantom foul on sophomore Mitch McGary put the Wildcats on the foul line with 24 seconds left. No. 1 Arizona sinks the pair and holds on for a 72-70 victory. Dec. 18: Nine days after being named a 2015 Rivals100 five-star recruit, Florida wide receiver George Campbell decommits. Dec. 27: The Michigan basketball program announces that McGary will undergo back surgery and is out indefinitely (and most likely for the entire year), dimming the Wolverines' 2014 prospects considerably and possibly seeing the end of McGary in a U-M uniform. Dec. 28: After losing 3-2 to Western Michigan a day earlier, the hockey team falls 3-0 to Michigan State, going 0-2 at the Great Lakes Invitational. The Wolverines, which had been 10-2-2 and ranked third nationally, are defeated by a pair of teams with losing records. Dec. 29: In a lackluster effort, especially defensively, Michigan goes down 7-0, 14-3 and 21-6 to an average Kansas State team and falls 31-14 to the Wildcats in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. ❏ Associate Editor Michael Spath has been with The Wolverine since 2002.
