UNDER THE DOME Springmann is the f o u r t h N o t re D a m e player since spring prac- tice who definitely wll not be able to suit up this fall for one reason or another. • In April, sophomore cornerback Rashad Kin- law was dismissed by Kelly for reasons not specified. He enrolled at ASA College in Brook- lyn. • In June, Kelly sus- pended junior slot re- c e i v e r Wi l l M a h o n e from all football-related activities after his arrest that month in Mahon- ing County in Ohio for myriad offenses, includ- ing assault on a police officer, intimidation of a public servant/public official and vandalism/ government entity. By June 24, Mahone was no longer enrolled at Notre Dame's sum- mer school program. At the start of training camp Aug. 4, Kelly said Mahone was "going to look at other options" rather than return to Notre Dame. • F r e s h m a n l i n e - backer Nile Sykes, who signed with the Irish in February, was given his release to transfer to Indiana University this summer. When Kelly was asked Aug. 1 to comment for the first time on the transfer, he replied: "It's got to be the right fit, and it just wasn't the right fit. "He's now in a situa- tion where he feels like it's a great fit for him and we wish him the best. He's a good kid. There's nothing that he did in our football pro- gram that put him in a bad situation with me personally. I gave him a great recommendation and we wish him the best."
