BY LOU SOMOGYI I n August 2012, third-year Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly told reporters that "FieldTurf is com- ing" to Notre Dame Stadium. For jumping the gun, Kelly admitted he was called to the carpet (no pun intended) by the administration. Two years later, though, his prophecy came true. In late July, final touches were completed with the new FieldTurf. The design remained relatively un- derstated, with an ND logo sewn in at midfield plus small shamrocks at the two kickoff points on the 35-yard line. The end zones kept the angled lines that have been on the field since HOME IMPROVEMENT New carpeting finally catches up with Brian Kelly's vision Among the many nods to Notre Dame's unique history and tradition, the 18 diagonal stripes in the end zones (nine in each) will be oriented at a 42-degree angle toward the Basilica and Golden Dome, celebrat- ing the numbers in the year of the university's founding (1842).
