10 Years Ago: Late August 2004
About a week prior to the start of the 2004 campaign, Notre Dame athletics director Dr. Kevin White
tells USA Today that the university will try to formulate future football schedules "from a success-
oriented perspective" with "more clarity and more sanity."
The declaration comes on the heels of a 5-7 season in which Notre Dame was clobbered by three teams
that were ranked No. 5 at the time of the game: at Michigan (38-0), USC (45-14) and Florida State (37-0).
The Irish also opened the year against a Washington State team that finished No. 9 in the Associated
Press poll. After the Michigan game, Notre Dame played at Michigan State, at No. 22 Purdue and at No.
15 Pitt. The season ended with a 38-12 drubbing at Syracuse.
"You look at the top four or five teams, look at the way they schedule," White said. "Nobody's schedul-
ing like we are. With all the parity and the way the landscape has changed, maybe we needed to do it 10
years ago. I can guarantee you we must do it now."
One of the first steps in 2004 was moving the BYU game to the opener so that Michigan would be
game two.
