had not been informed that players other than the four named would be investigated. Russell, Daniels, Williams and Moore are welcome at the Guglielmino Athlet- ics Complex during the investigation, Kelly said. "I care deeply about the four young men, and I feel for KeiVarae and Ishaq and Kendall and DaVaris," he said. "Ob- viously, I care for those four guys deeply. They're part of our program. "But I've got a job to do, and I have another 100 players that I have to be concerned with. My focus and attention is on continuing to develop our players on a day-to-day basis, and creating the right environment for our guys to live and learn and make good decisions." As for whether the four would want to remain at Notre Dame if suspended or dismissed, Kelly said it is too early to know. He compared it to Golson's academic suspension in May 2013 and added that he did not ask the quarter- back's intentions until the dismissal was official. When asked by a reporter, Kelly declined to share what message he relayed to the rest of his players when addressing the news, but said that he would expect them to come together during the adversity. "Kids this age are resilient anyway," he said. "They have a resiliency. They want to play football for Notre Dame. They want to be successful." At the Aug. 16 open practice, sopho- more Cole Luke replaced Russell on the first-team defense, while sophomore Isaac Rochell received reps as the start- ing strongside defensive end in place of Williams. "As players, you don't replace KeiV- arae Russell," Kelly said. "He's one of the best corners we've had here in quite some time. We'll find a way. We'll rally, and it means the next man in gets an opportunity. [Sophomore cornerbacks] Cole Luke and Devin Butler are going to have to step into that role. We're going to have to get them up to speed quickly, but you don't replace a guy like that. "Daniels certainly has had his mo- ments here, but we think we've got some depth at wide receiver. He was an outstanding player. … Kendall was coming along, but we're going to have to rely on other players to step up and do the job for us." Kelly was posed a pair of questions about what this incident — as well as past situations — say about his effective- ness as CEO of the program. "This isn't the time to have a debate on what my leadership or lack thereof is," he said. "My focus is on my foot- ball team and getting this team ready. There's a time and a place for that. Peo- ple have their opinions, and certainly they're entitled to them. "I'm going to focus on this football team and getting them ready to play Rice." ✦ "WE HOLD OUR PLAYERS TO A VERY HIGH STANDARD. … WE DON'T SAY ONE THING AND DO ANOTHER. … WE DON'T LOOK AWAY. THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS IN WHAT WE DO." HEAD COACH BRIAN KELLY
