FOOTBALL RECRUITING BY TOM LOY I n recruiting it's not all about being first, but it definitely helps. Notre Dame tends to be extremely selective and thorough in its recruiting efforts, and that doesn't always sit well with the Irish fans across the country. The football staff is hoping that its latest move shows that Notre Dame can, and wants to, go head to head with the nation's other top programs in marketing. The Shamrock Selection made a huge splash in early September when news circulated that the mailboxes of many of the top junior recruits from the class of 2016 were going to be filled up with letters from South Bend. A total of 129 pieces of mail — represent- ing the 129th recruiting class at Notre Dame — were being sent to the elite prospects from across the country. The purpose of the mass mailing was to show those players how big a priority they are to the Irish football staff. The Shamrock Selection Is Key For Irish In 2016 Among those likely to receive Notre Dame's Shamrock Selection mailing is Thousand Oaks (Calif.) Westlake star Malik Henry, the nation's No. 2 pro-style quarterback and No. 4 overall prospect according to 247Sports. PHOTO COURTESY 247SPORTS
