UNDER THE DOME back was becoming an extinct football species. Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly has operated with a three-man run- ning back committee each of the past two seasons. Last year, it was then-junior Cam McDaniel (705), Atkinson (555) and freshman Tarean Folston (470). This year, sophomore and 2013 medical redshirt Greg Bryant replaces Atkin- son, who made the Oakland Raiders' practice squad this summer. Versus Rice, the staff tried to balance the three-man rotation with running rhythm. A different back was inserted each new series, starting with McDan- iel, then Folston, then Bryant. They were then kept in virtually their entire series, in an attempt to keep continu- ity on that drive. Although the goal would be trying to achieve the best of both worlds — using the depth while not exhausting anyone — Kelly admits he doesn't know if it's the ideal bal- ance the rest of the season.
