As the cliché goes, the apple — or in this case the football — doesn't fall far from the tree. That's the case with Virginia fourth- year free safety Brandon Phelps, whose father, Gary, lettered for the Cavaliers in 1982 and 1983 while playing for then-head coach George Welsh. Phelps has displayed both versatility and durability. He was moved from cornerback to safety during 2012 fall camp and has remained there ever since the change. Phelps played in all 12 of Virginia's games (10 starts) last season and in 2012 was one of only 11 Cavaliers to start all 12 games. He made a career-high nine tackles in a loss last season to North Carolina. My advice to student-athletes is: Definitely stay on top of your school- work. We are athletes, but we're also students. Make sure you have good study habits because I feel it directly correlates to what you do on the field. The primary challenge facing student-athletes today is: Having a bad work ethic.
