doesn't just talk the game. She'll be in the gym at 7 or 8 o'clock in the morning getting shots up. It doesn't surprise me that her game's improving be- cause she really puts the work in." Randolph said winning the ACC's Sixth Player of the Year award was a validation of sorts. "That's the kind of role [that] sometimes people overlook," she said. "It's really significant on bas- ketball teams. I just really appreciate the acknowl- edgement. I was trying to be a spark for the team off the bench." Virginia fourth-year Sarah Imovbioh said Ran- dolph was definitely that. "She played a bigger role on the team last season," Imovbioh said, "and she was able to come in from the bench and impact the game immediately." Looking back on last season, Randolph said she is most proud of Virginia's 86-72 win over Maryland. In that game, the 5-10 guard had 19 points and four rebounds. This season, Boyle plans to start the third-year. "I think she played as many, if not more, minutes as our starters last year," Boyle said, "so it's not a role you hold on to forever. It's usually a one-year kind of commission and then you move on. And so this year, we're looking for a lot more out of her." Randolph is excited for the challenge. "On this team now it's probably best for me to start," she said. "I embraced my role last year, but I feel like my role has to be a little different this year. I feel like starting I'll be able to show the newcom- ers on our team what UVa basketball is about — the SOME OF THE BEST VIRGINIA SIXTH MEN OF ALL TIME MEN Jay McKenzie: Way back in the 1958‑59 season, the 6‑0 guard was Virginia's second‑leading scorer at 15.3 points per game. Ac‑ cording to the UVa record book, that's the most points a reserve player has ever averaged. Bobby Stokes: With his pesky defense, he was a key reserve on the 1976 team that won the ACC Tournament championship — a feat that wasn't accomplished again until last season. Lee Raker: A first‑year during the 1977‑78 season, Raker aver‑ aged 10.6 points as Virginia went 20‑8. Raker would go on to help lead the Cavs to an NIT championship in 1980 and a Final Four appearance in 1981. Jim Miller: Along with point guard Ricky Stokes, a key bench player during the Ralph Sampson era, averaging 9.6 points in 1983 when Virginia went 29‑5 and made the Elite Eight. Curtis Staples: As a first‑year during the 1994‑95 season, Staples played mostly off the bench and averaged 11.9 points per game while UVa went 25‑9 and made the Elite Eight. The best of the rest: Chip Case (during the 1967‑68 season); Jim Hobgood (1970‑71); Ricky Stokes (1982‑83); Tom Sheehey (1983‑84); Doug Smith (1992‑93); Jamal Robinson (1993‑94); Roger Mason (1999‑2000); Keith Friel (2000‑01); Gary Forbes (2004‑05); and Adrian Joseph (2006‑07). As a first-year during the 1994-95 sea- son, Curtis Staples played mostly off the bench and averaged 11.9 points per contest. PHOTO COURTESY UVA
