CAVS FOR LIFE SPOTLIGHT: JEFF PUTMAN, MEN'S GOLF 1988 Jeff Putman, a 1988 men's golf alum, comes back every year for the All-Sports Re- union, and this year was no different. Making the trip from Connecticut, Putman enjoys the excuse to return to Charlottesville. "My teammates and I created such a great bond at UVa as golfers and the All-Sports Reunion is two-fold for me, it's a reason to come back to Charlottesville and it's a great excuse for us all to get together," Putman said. Recruited to play golf at UVa by former head coach Clem King, Putman now works for a New York based hedge fund and attributes much of his success to his time as a student-athlete, "My experience as a student-athlete helped to shape me as an individual. As a student-athlete you really have to balance all the things in your life and at an early age you have to make a lot of choices. Golf is an individual sport but in college it's a team sport and being a part of a team is something that is really important in business." As a Cavalier for Life and VAF member, Putman continues to make an investment in the program he says gave him so much. "It's clearly shaped my life and others around me. Golf gave me the opportunity to come to a great institution that is recognized around the world. Donating to the University is my way of saying thank you and I want to give that oppor- tunity to other student-athletes. With VAF, I want to lead by example. My goal is to get as many student-athlete alumni, my teammates especially, to give back. We all got something out of our time at UVa and I think everyone has room in their life to give a little back." Welcome future 'Hoos! Now that the "Early" National Letter of Intent (NLI) signing period concludes, The Compliance Of- fice would like to provide you with insight as to what it means when a prospective student-athlete (PSA) signs an NLI for your favorite UVa sports team. For all sports except football and soccer, the first signing period occurs (November 12-19, 2014). The signing period for football and soccer does not begin until February 4, 2015. The NLI is a binding agreement between a PSA and UVa. For the NLI to be binding, it must be accompanied by an athlet- ics aid agreement. A PSA not receiving athletics aid is not permitted to sign an NLI. The athletics aid agreement is subject to NCAA rules (either a one-year athletic scholarship or a multi-year athletic scholarship). When a PSA signs with UVa, he or she agrees to attend the institution full-time for at least one academic year (two semesters). Conversely, UVa agrees to provide athletics financial aid for at least one academic year (two semesters). Once the PSA signs with UVa, other institutions must respect the PSA's NLI signing by ceasing all recruitment. This recruiting ban remains in effect until the PSA enrolls at UVa. Once enrolled, the student-athlete is governed by NCAA recruiting regulations. If the PSA does not enroll at UVa, the recruiting ban will be lifted after the institution's academic year has elapsed (e.g., PSA signs during 2014-15, recruiting ban applies through the end of the 2015-16 academic year).
