JANUARY 2015 ■ 63 ■ FOOTBALL RECRUITING Notre Dame, Ohio State, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. He is being encouraged by the NCSU commitments in the 2015 class to join the Pack, especially from the state's top- ranked recruit, four-star defensive lineman Darian Roseboro of Lincolnton High. "I talk to him all the time, almost daily," Hines said. "The recruits are way more intimate. You can only talk so much to coaches. With recruits, it's closer, and I'll hang out with them. The players can recruit you better than the coaches can sometimes." Roseboro is ranked No. 39 nationally. If Hines were to join Roseboro at State, that would mark the first time since 2005 that two top-100 recruits signed with NCSU. Running back Toney Baker and offensive lineman Curtis Crouch were the highly ranked pair that year. A big factor in Hines' decision will be his sister Nyah's track scholarship. She has been offered by both NC State and Wake Forest. The 5-8, 180-pound Hines is also one of the top sprinters in the state. He has been timed as fast as 10.52 sec- onds in the 100-meter dash. ATHLETE MIKE HUGHES New Bern (N.C.) High Like Hines, Hughes has seen his rank- ing elevate in Rivals.com. He was up- graded to a four-star prospect and the No. 18 athlete in the country. The bump up makes him one of just 14 four- star in-state prospects in the 2015 class. The 5-10, 180- pounder plays quarterback for New Bern, which was 15-0 entering the 4-A state playoffs finals against Char- lotte Catholic. Most schools are recruiting Hughes to play cornerback in college. He has the athleticism to play in the secondary. At the Shrine Bowl combine last summer in Washington, N.C., he was timed at 4.34 seconds in the 40-yard dash, registered a 10-3 standing broad jump and did 25 reps at 185 pounds on the bench press. Hughes has taken official visits to NC State (Oct. 11), Florida (Nov. 15) and North Carolina (Nov. 29). The latter came when the Heels lost to NCSU in Kenan Stadium. While he was in Florida, Gators head coach Will Muschamp was fired. Hughes said that his trip to NCSU, where he was hosted by former teammate and sophomore wide receiver Bra'Lon Cherry, was enjoyable.
