116th (Notre Dame had 26). "It doesn't feel like that after you lose and after you finish a campaign like we have this season from a win- loss standout, but the tide is coming back in," Diaco said after the final game. Martin had no place to go but up in his first season because the Red- Hawks were 0-12 the year prior. This year, they finished 2-10 and lost five games by eight points or less. Three former Notre Dame players used their fifth season of eligibility with him. Quarterback Andrew Hendrix completed 49.3 percent of his passes for 3,280 yards (18th most in the country) with 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions, tight end Alex Welch was fourth in receptions with 23 for 296 yards and two scores, and defensive back Lo Wood was ninth in tackles with 31. Brian Polian, an assistant for Char- lie Weis at Notre Dame from 2005-09, had a solid second season at Nevada, improving the Wolfpack from 4-8 his first season to 7-5 (4-4 in the Moun- tain West Conference) with a bid to the New Orleans Bowl. Another former Notre Dame assis- tant, Trent Miles (2002-04) has taken his share of lumps while bringing Georgia State to the FBS level and going 0-12 and 1-11 his first two seasons. But he also started 0-12 and 1-10 at Indiana State before taking the Sycamores to three straight winning seasons, enabling him to get the Georgia State job. Finally, former Irish head coach Bob Davie finished 4-8 in his third season at New Mexico after opening 4-9 and 3-9. — Lou Somogyi UNDER THE DOME Former Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chuck Martin debuted with a 2-10 mark at rebuilding Miami (Ohio).
