Getting To Know … FIFTH-YEAR SENIOR DEFENSEMAN ROBBIE RUSSO ✦ GIMME FIVE The Dec. 30 Music City Bowl meeting with LSU will mark Irish head coach Brian Kelly's fifth post- season game at Notre Dame. That ties him with Ara Parseghian (1964-74) for second-most bowl appearances by an Irish head coach. With Dan Devine (1975-80), the Irish also turned down an opportunity to play in the 1976 Cotton Bowl because of a disappointing 8-3 record, and did not go to a bowl with a 7-4 record in 1979. Under Lou Holtz (1986-96) the Irish made nine consecutive bowl appearances from 1987-95. Both Parseghian and Holtz defeated three un- beaten and/or No. 1-ranked teams in bowls. By playing No. 22 LSU (Associated Press poll) this year, Kelly is seeking his initial postseason win over a ranked team. Here are the top five major bowl appearances by Irish coaches since 1969, with "major" defined over the years as Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton, Fiesta or the BCS National Championship Game. Major Rk. Coach (Years) Bowls Record 1. Lou Holtz (1986-96) 9 5-4 2. Ara Parseghian (1964-74) 5 3-2 3. Dan Devine (1975-80) 3 2-1 4. Charlie Weis (2005-09) 2 0-2 5. Brian Kelly (2010-) 1 0-1 MOVING?
