He may be picking his spots these days, but he's picking them with an uncanny instinct for maximum Internet virality. Like when he showed up at Old Main to present an auto- graphed helmet to a pair of Penn State alums who were taking pictures on campus following their wedding re- ception. And when he initiat- ed a FaceTime conversation with a random Penn State fan on signing day (albeit acci- dently). And when he gave his TED talk. And when he posed for photos with Flavor Flav at a Penn State basketball game. It's probably only a matter of time before he starts photo- bombing visitors to the Nit- tany Lion shrine. Whether all that clickbait is the result of conscious design or simply the byproduct of Franklin's always-on person- ality isn't clear and probably doesn't matter. What matters are results, and he's getting them. A few weeks ago, when asked about returning the program to its customary lev- el, Franklin said this: "I think we're closer to that than we've been in a long time." That's not the same as saying they're close, but it is an acknowl- edgement that there's cause for optimism. Who knows, maybe Penn State will have more to celebrate this coming season than it did in 2014, when its most signi2cant wins took place in boardrooms and law o4ces. Be forewarned, however.
