Fourth-year wide receiver Canaan Severin played in all 12 of Virginia's games last season, and led the Cavaliers in receptions (42), receiving yards (578) and touchdown catches (five). Severin caught at least one pass in each game. "Canaan's really had another good offseason," UVa of- fensive coordinator Steve Fairchild told The Richmond Times-Dispatch. "He's probably in the best shape he's ever been in. "He'll build on last year. He's a hard-working guy with a great work ethic. It rubs off on everybody else." My advice to student-athletes is: Take advantage of the opportunity. If you're a student-athlete, somebody has put you in position to play a sport you love plus a chance to get a good educa- tion. Attack every day and don't take it for granted. It comes to an end just like ev- erything else. Take advan- tage of every day. The primary challenge facing student-athletes to- day is: Scheduling. I learned that this past season. Get ever ything in, including whatever your sport is. Get to the training room and find some social time. It's a lot different than if you're not playing a sport. The best thing about UVa is: The people. I've met some of the best people I've been around at Virginia — people I'll be around the rest of my life like coaches, teachers, academic advisors, coaches' wives, etc. Why I chose UVa: I chose UVa because my family and I thought it was the best school that offered a high major (sociology), plus a global degree and was in a super con- ference. Coach [Mike] London recruited me, and I knew it was going to a good fit for me. What I like the most about football: I love to compete. I love to face the best — the one-on-one matchups, whether it's UCLA, Florida State or Miami. The competing aspect is what really gets it going for me. The highlight of my athletic career: I'm proud to say I was named a captain by my teammates and coaches. My peers and coaches saw me as a guy that can lead this group. It told me my hard work is paying off for me. The most important thing I've learned from football: Trust the process. You're one of four team captains for the 2015 sea- son. What do you feel your primary responsibility will be? Win. My post-college ambition is: To earn the opportunity to play at the next level. — Mike Scandura GETTING TO KNOW FOURTH-YEAR WIDE RECEIVER CANAAN SEVERIN CAVALIER SPORTS WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE … … TV show: "Family Guy" … movie?
