"He doesn't dazzle you physically," (added Phil Simms) "but you've got to be
careful about what you're looking at when you're studying quarterbacks."
Sounds familiar doesn't it? They were, of course, talking about the very un-
spectacular Brian Griese, who
went on to post a higher QB
rating in his rookie year than
even the great Elway in six of
his 16 Bronco seasons.
After watching 30 intercep-
tions in the last two seasons,
"unspectacular" but "poised"
sounds like just what we need.

• Nothing personal, but the
Jake Rudock/Brian Griese com-
parisons aren't fair.
Griese was a 3rd round NFL
draft pick and a NFL pro-bowler.
He was 3-0 against Ohio State.
He led the team to a national
championship obviously.
So while they are similar, re-
ferring to Griese as "unspectac-
ular" is a bit of a disingenuous
characterization of him.

• Being described as "unspectacular" is not disingenuous at all. John Elway was
spectacular. John Elway could put a team on his back and carry them to victory.
Brian Griese was never asked or expected to do that. His job was to not lose
games with mental errors. You can be an average athlete but smart. Trent Dilfer
won a Super Bowl as an average quarterback. Put him on any other team not
named the Ravens that year and he doesn't win squat. That defense that year
won them the Super Bowl, much like Michigan's '97 defense helped win the na-
tional championship. This year's team will also be leaning on our defense.

• If you take time to read the entire [ESPN The Magazine] article, it's actually
pretty telling. Cam Cameron really hits the nail on the head, and I think actually
diagnoses one of Michigan's biggest issues the past seven-plus years: people
All eyes will be on fifth-year senior transfer quar-
terback Jake Rudock this fall, and he's a popular
topic of conversation on TheWolverine.com during
the preseason.
