Coaching Roles Defined While play-calling duties on offense were described as a collaborative effort among head coach Brian Kelly, associate head coach/wide receivers coach Mike Denbrock and of- fensive coordinator/quarter- backs coach Mike Sanford, other roles on game day were more clearly defined. D e f e n s i v e c o o r d i n a t o r Brian VanGorder will remain on the field while lineback - ers coach Mike Elston will be in the press box with San- ford. "His focus is really look- ing at the overall structure of the defense," Kelly said of Elston, who is on Kelly's staff for a 12th straight year. "When you're on the field, you're zeroed much more in on specifics. That's more of a bigger picture look when you're up in the box." Also in the press box will be newly hired offensive analyst Jeff Quinn — Kelly's longtime right-hand man be - fore serving as the head coach at the University of Buffalo from 2010-14 — and special assistant to the head coach Bob Elliott, who coached safeties or outside linebackers for the Irish from 2012-14. "Coach Elliot will keep track of game management types of situations, video replay," explained Kelly. "He'll have more of a game management role, where Coach Quinn will have more of an analytical and statistical role in the box, as well as some oversight as it relates to special teams." The analysts are allowed to communicate with Kelly and the staff throughout the game, but are not permitted by NCAA rules to coach the players.
