FAN FORUM ery play has been over-analyzed to the point where theorizing has taken precedence over performing. When things happen on the field that aren't supposed to happen according to the theory, reaction time is deadened. Terms like maximization, boundaries, technique and so on don't translate to action. I love metadata and theory as much as any fan, but data only shows what happened, not what will happen; data and theory are not predictors. In effect, Notre Dame players are studying a four-year course in foot- ball theory while players in other pro- grams are progressing faster through experience. I wonder if the evolution from Theoretical Football will be "Vir- tual Football," wherein players use simulator helmets to learn their roles. First, though, ask airline pilots if they think they learned everything they needed to know from their tech- nical manuals and their flight simula- tors. Ronny P Kaye Via the Internet DON'T GET DISTRACTED First, let me say that it's a bad idea to have Showtime (Hard Knocks) cov- ering the Irish. The distraction will be good for one loss. Looking at the schedule, six of the Notre Dame opponents will have at least 10 days to prepare for the Irish. I see Notre Dame going 8-4, with losses to Georgia Tech, Clemson, USC and Stanford. Hope I am wrong, but Brian Kelly seems to be a 7-5 or 8-4 type coach. John Schumarker Via the Internet BE HEARD! Send your letters to: Letters Blue & Gold Illustrated P. O.
