4.1 Million viewers, per the Nielson Company for Notre Dame's season‑opening 38‑3 drubbing of Texas Sept. 5 on NBC Sports. It was the most‑watched and highest rated season open‑ ing Fighting Irish game since 2006, when 6.9 million viewers saw No. 4‑ranked Notre Dame defeated Penn State 41‑17. This year's opener topped last year's versus Rice by 95 percent (2.1 million). 6 Fighting Irish running backs since 1944 that scored on their first career carry— with freshman Josh Adams (14 yards) the most recent versus Texas. The others were Nunzio Marino — 54 yards versus Dartmouth in 1944, Phil Colella — 76 yards versus Illinois in 1945, Larry Parker — 63 yards versus Purdue in 1970, Art Best — 56 yards versus Pitt in 1972, and Rob McGarry — who never carried again — two yards versus Purdue in 1980. Last week we had Best as the last one, but McGarry — who was a tight end/fullback hybrid — should be included. 6 Opponents from the Atlantic Coast Conference that Notre Dame will face this season — the most from any one league in school history. The previous record was five from the Big Ten, most recently in 1968 when the Irish played Purdue, Iowa, Northwestern, Illinois and Michigan State in consecutive weeks. The ACC represen‑ tation this year is at Virginia (Sept. 12), Georgia Tech (Sept. 19), at Clemson (Oct. 3), at Pitt (Nov. 7), Wake Forest (Nov. 14) and versus Boston College (Nov. 21). 9 Notre Dame's rating among the best colleges in the country, per College Factual's latest study of 1,394 universities. The report in the Sept. 8 edition of USA Today is "data driven," from freshman retention rate to student loan default rates. Notre Dame's average SAT score was listed at 1,430 (1,600 possible). The eight schools above Notre Dame were Yale, Pennsylvania, Duke, Stan‑ ford, Harvard, Brown, Princeton and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). 15‑0 Record of Under Armour schools during the opening weekend of college football (and could have been 16‑0 had Toledo's game not been canceled because of lightning). Among the highlights were Notre Dame defeating Texas, North‑ western upsetting Stanford, Utah turning back Michigan, South Carolina defeating North Carolina and Auburn vanquishing Louis‑ ville. Maryland Cincinnati, Texas Tech, Hawaii, South Florida, Old Dominion, Navy, Colorado State, and Boston College also don Under Armour gear.
