They didn't have a single turnover, while Army had seven fumbles, three of which were recovered by Penn State. Also, Joey Julius was 2 for 2 on field goal attempts. BAD NEWS The pass- ing game struggled yet again, and as James Franklin acknowl- edged after the game, its difficulties weren't due entirely to the slick field conditions. Other than back-to- back chunk plays by Chris Godwin and Mike Gesicki, the Lions didn't make anything happen downfield. THE TAKEAWAY This game was a sobering wake-up call for Penn State as it gets set to begin its Big Ten sea- son in earnest next week vs. Indiana. Photo by Steve Manuel M A T T   H E R B | M A T T @ B L U E W H I T E O N L I N E . c O M MAKING A STAND Penn State holds its ground to thwart Army's upset bid Maybe, if its injured players heal up and if the rain ever stops in Happy Valley, Penn State will be able to wrap up its five-game homestand next week against Indiana with the kind of great per- formance that the Nittany Lions and their follow- ers want to believe they have in them. But on Saturday against Army, they had to settle for good enough. Good enough on offense, good enough defense, but not by much, as the Black Knights threw a scare into the heavily favored Lions before falling, 20-14, in a wet, chilly Beaver Stadium. "We're 1-0 this week, which is always our goal," coach James Franklin said. "There's a lot of learn- ing that still needs to take place, but I'd rather learn aAer a win and clean some of those things up."
