UNDER THE DOME Irish student-athletes excelling on the field and in the classroom Jeffrey Farina — Soccer The sophomore forward scored a dramatic game-winning goal for the Irish in a 3-2 overtime home victory over ACC foe Duke Oct. 10. An ACC All-Freshman team honoree last season, Farina cleaned up an attempted header from junior defense- man Matt Habrowski in the 97th minute to deliver the Irish the win. Farina started 12 of Notre Dame's first 13 matches and was tied for fourth on the team with six points (one goal and four assists). Dennis Gilbert — Hockey The freshman defenseman scored two goals and picked up two assists in Notre Dame's 7-5 home exhibition victory over the University of Guelph Oct. 9. The rookie's four-point outing led the way for seven Irish skaters who tallied multiple points. Gilbert was selected in the third round (91st overall) by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and played for the Chicago Steel of the USHL in 2014-15. Taylor Klawunder — Soccer The sophomore midfielder scored the go-ahead goal off a header from sophomore defender/midfielder Sabrina Flores' corner kick in an eventual 2-0 home win over Boston College Oct. 11. Klawunder's tally in the 27th minute was her third marker of the season, and her first game winner. She also had three assists and had played in all 14 games for the Irish as of Oct. 11. Maddie Plumlee — Volleyball The sophomore outside hitter picked up a career-high 19 kills in Notre Dame's 3-2 win at Clemson Oct. 9. It was the second straight game with a new career high for Plumlee, with her previous best 14 kills coming in a 3-2 loss to Syracuse Oct. 14. Plumlee saw action in each of Notre Dame's first 14 contests with five starts, and ranked fifth on the team with 66 kills. TOP OF THE CLASS
