over the slew of SEC schools for one telling reason. "They are going to give me the best of both worlds in terms of being one of the best schools in football and one of the best schools academically," Vaughn said. "When I was up there for my official visit, I saw everything I needed to see to know it was the place for me." But according to Saulsberry, Vaughn would have never taken a visit to South Bend if it weren't for VanGorder and Lyght's initial inquiry about the cornerback. Saulsberry said the two coaches were able to convince Vaughn to take an unofficial visit in June. The rest was history. "We get a boatload of recruiters here at Whitehaven," Saulsberry said. "But I think the college tour we took to Notre Dame was great and a special time. He got to see Coach VanGorder and Coach Lyght again, and it was just FILM ANALYSIS Strengths Versatility is the first thing one notices about Donté Vaughn, who has the skills to play cor- nerback, safety and nickel in the Irish defense … Possesses tremendous length and range, which makes him ideal for the safety position … Also has good cornerback skills, showing foot quick- ness and instincts in coverage … Uses his long arms and strength to jam receivers well at the line … Shows good transition ability, which helps him open and run, making him a good man-to- man defender. Areas For Improvement The major question mark about Vaughn in regards to his ability to stick at cornerback is his lack of ideal speed … In many ways he makes up for it with his length, quickness and instincts, but there are still legitimate concerns … If he cannot run well enough to play cornerback, his skill set makes him a great fit for the free safety position. — Bryan Driskell
