Jarred Reuter is learning to enjoy southern hospital- ity. The 6-7, 243-pound New England native selected the Cavaliers over offers from Pittsburgh, Rhode Island, South Carolina, St. Johns, Rutgers, Iowa and Providence, and signed with the Wahoos last November. Reuter said one of the biggest surprises for him was how at home the people at UVA and in the Charlottes- ville community have made him feel. "I was impressed with how good the people are, in all of Charlottesville, the whole community, and definitely within the basketball program," Reuter said. "My team- mates and everybody on the staff, I was really surprised how each and everyone was a genuine person." Reuter credits arriving in Charlottesville in early June and spending two years at a boarding school — Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H. — with helping make the transition from high school to college life a pretty smooth adjustment. "Coming in this summer was helpful," the Marion, Mass., native said. "My last two years of high school, I was at a boarding school so the transition of being away from home wasn't so bad." The free time from the summer is gone, and with eight hours daily of academics, study, practice, weight lifting and film study there's not a lot of time for much else. "Over the summer we would go to the downtown mall and just walk around," Reuter said. "Now I don't really have much time." Reuter is expected to be a nice addition to an already talented UVA front line. He's a strong athlete who can work offensively in the post and step out to shoot the mid-range jumper. He's also learning Virginia's vaunted pack line defense, which Reuter said is a far different scheme from any defense he's played before. "Once you get it, the pack line is not a super hard concept, but it's a lot different than what I was used to in high school," he noted. "We played man to man, and it was not to complex. This is the first time I've really been part of a complex defensive system." Virginia head coach Tony Bennett was also very wel- coming for another post presence. "He is tough, physical and plays with a lot of intensity," the coach said. "He is a gifted passer who plays with great feel for an inside player. Jarred will also value the degree he will earn from the University of Virginia." For 2015-16, Reuter said he's simply looking for ways to contribute. "I'm just trying to do whatever I can to help the team," he stated. "Whatever is asked of me, I'm looking forward to being able to do." — Greg Waters BEHIND THE SCENES FIRST-YEAR BASKETBALL PLAYER JARRED REUTER Reuter was rated as the No. 139 prep senior in the country by Rivals.com.
