HOO TO WATCH: MONÉ JONES At 6-3, Moné Jones is a welcome addition to the Virginia women's basketball team. During her four-year tenure in Charlottesville, head coach Joanne Boyle has been short on tall post players. Enter- ing the 2015-16, she will have three highly touted first-years to roam the post. The most impressive is Jones. "She's not a typical freshman," Boyle said. "I'm most impressed with her bas- ketball IQ and how quickly she's able to pick up things." Jones is a long, lanky, versatile power forward, who can rebound, blocks shots and score. She plays with her back to the basket, but can also jump out of the lane and drop a 15-footer forcing the defense to defend both. Basketball-wise the rookie said she is "finding her way within the of- fense right now — learning to read defenses and how to feed off team- mates." From Riverside High in Durham, N.C., Jones came to Charlottesville following graduation. "I fell in love with this place," she said. "I'm loving UVA, loving Charlottesville. It's a really great place. I love the campus, I love the campus atmosphere. "The team really opened their arms and invited me in, and the coaches invited me in. It's been like a home away from home." Jones not only excelled in basketball, she was an accomplished volleyball player as well. In fact, she gives volleyball a lot of credit for her rebounding and shot-blocking skills. "Volleyball is all about timing, and in basketball when you're blocking shots or going up for a rebound it's all about timing," Jones explained. "Volleyball has really helped me with the tim- ing aspect. Volleyball is very competitive, you're always moving and your agility helps in basketball on the defensive end when you're guarding somebody. The two sports correlate very well." Boyle is hoping those volleyball skills translate to big wins and some postseason hardware for her Hoos. — Greg Waters Jones, a McDonald's High School All-America nominee, was rated as the No. 11 forward and No. 61 overall recruit nationally by ESPN.
