has served as the school's head athletic trainer since August 1998. Saliba explained how the medical staff and trainers work together to keep student-athletes in action. "It's a close collaboration," he said. "We reach out to [the doctors] when necessary and they're readily available. They have the strengths in their knowledge base to know the nu- ances the student-athletes have placed on them as well as the timing issues to keep them safe and active." Associate athletic trainer Kelli Frye Pugh is the primary care provider working with the football program. Many think of the trainer role as one that hands out Gatorade and tapes ankles one day a week, but it's much more according to Pugh. "I head up the medical staff that cares for the football team and I work under our physicians, medical directors and Ethan Saliba," Pugh noted. Because of the amount of time they spend with the stu- dent-athletes and the close relationships they develop, trainers are critical support staff. "We have some of the best athletic trainers in the country," Chhabra said. "They're sort of the first line, they're always with the athletes. Practice, in the weight room, our athletic training staff is just absolutely exceptional." The trainers also work closely with the strength and con- ditioning staff because a member of the athletic training group must be present anytime a football-related activity is taking place. "We're with the football team in the summer when football is conducting summer workouts, or in January and February when they have winter workouts," Pugh added. But the teamwork doesn't end there. When basketball standout Malcolm Brogdon suffered a broken bone in his left foot in 2012, the secret to his success was the work of doctors, trainers, Brogdon and coaches like basketball strength and conditioning coach Mike Curtis ac- cording to head basketball coach Tony Bennett. "What the staff [Mike and Ethan] did to get Malcolm back and his diligence was absolutely incredible," Bennett said. That's the goal of the entire medical staff — to keep UVA athletics safe and delivering plenty of incredible moments. — Greg Waters
