• Lacrosse Greg Coholan led Virginia's lacrosse team in scoring last season with 39 goals and 53 points en route to receiving honorable mention All-America accolades from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. However, that wasn't any consolation for the redshirt fourth-year because the Cavaliers were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Johns Hopkins, 19-7. Yet Coholan feels that loss will help Virginia this season. "I think it definitely will be a motivator," he said. "We have been work- ing hard to get back to where we were. No team likes to lose a game like that especially in the playoffs. I would say that will be a motivating factor [to achieve success in 2016]." Coholan has been installed as UVA's first two-time captain since Steele Stanwick in 2011 and 2012, and he embraces his leadership role. "My responsibility as a captain is to keep everyone focused on the task at hand — winning every day, keeping energy levels up, not getting tired too quickly and keeping everything running smoothly on and off the field," he said. "I also want to be available to everybody at any time." Fortunately for head coach Dom Starsia, Coholan was "available" last season when fourth-year attack James Pannell was sidelined with a season-ending injury. Starsia moved Coholan from midfield to fill the void created by Pannell's absence. "It wasn't too difficult because I did that in high school," Coholan said of the position switch. "I was familiar with attack, the dodging and so forth. The more difficult part was getting into the flow of the attack- ing part of the offense because I was accustomed to being a middie." Coholan, who was selected No. 6 overall in the 2016 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft by the Boston Cannons Jan. 22, said he is a better player now than he was when he arrived in Charlottesville thanks to his coaches. "The biggest aspect of my game that developed when I got here was lacrosse IQ," he said. "Coach Starsia and Coach [Marc] Van Arsdale helped me understand the game better than a freshman usually does." — Mike Scandura ◆ Photo by Pete Emerson/courtesy UVA cavalier profile GREG COHOLAN Redshirt Fourth-Year
