The Cavaliers collectively shot a 17-un- der 271, a school regional record, in the second round, and Bard led the way. He returned to form by shooting a 6-under 66. On the third and final day, Bard shot a team- best 2-under 70, while two of his teammates — first-year Thomas Walsh and third-year Jimmy Stanger — carded birdies to secure a fifth-place finish and a spot in the NCAA Championships May 27-June 1 in Eugene, Ore. At the national tournament, Bard shot a 5-over 285 to tie for 17th, while the Cavaliers finished 22nd in the team competition. Bard was named All-ACC for the second straight year, and he led the team with a 71.23 stroke average while posting six top-10 fin- ishes. His stroke average ranked fourth in the ACC during the regular season, and he was rated No. 43 in the country by Golfstat and No. 44 by Golfweek as of May 31. All told, he led UVA in scoring in seven of 13 tourna- ments and repeated as the medalist at the U.S. Collegiate Championships in October. "All-ACC is nice, but focusing on the team goal of making a run at nationals is more important," Bard said. "I can't focus on the accolades, just on my play which will take care of the rest." Bard is known for not taking credit for his accomplishments, but his coach has no problem praising him. "He arrived in Charlottesville very under- recruited in my opinion," Sargent said of Bard. "And he has proven a lot of critics wrong through his play. His performance at the US Amateur and The Masters proves Derek to be a world-class golfer. "I think he has a very bright future, one that includes the PGA Tour … he is an in- credible young man to coach." ◆
