CAVALIER SPORTS GETTING TO KNOW FOURTH-YEAR TENNIS PLAYER MAC STYSLINGER To paraphrase a cliché, the tennis ball didn't fall far from the tree as far as Virginia fourth-year Mac Styslinger is concerned. Mac's father, Mark, was a two-time All-American at SMU. The younger Styslinger, who is a team co-cap- tain, combined with third-year Thai-Son Kwiat- kowski to capture the ITA All-American doubles title this past October. All told, the UVA tandem produced a team-best 28-9 doubles record for No. 1 UVA, which captured its second consecutive national championship and third in four years. Styslinger and Kwiatkowski were one of the 32 duos selected to participate in the NCAA doubles championships, but fell in their first match. My advice to student-athletes is: On the aca- demic side it would be getting to like my profes- sors and developing a personal relationship with them. On the athletic side it's rebounding after tough losses in your career and coming back stronger. The primary challenge facing student-ath- letes today is: The hardest thing is time manage- ment. Finding the right amount of time for your academics and trying to find a balance. The best thing about UVA is: I think just the UVA community. You feel like you're part of a fraternity and that everybody looks out for you. You have a strong network at UVA. UVA alumni are looking out for undergraduates and everyone is willing to help. Why I chose UVA: I chose UVA because of Coach (Brian) Boland and his whole staff, and because I love the city of Charlottesville. What I like the most about tennis: I like be- Styslinger, a team co-captain, combined with third-year Thai-Son Kwiatowski to win the ITA All-American doubles title this past October.
