of spring plus attended the various spring so- cials with the Virginia Athletics Foundation. "When all of the coaches get back, we'll do the first four opponents analysis," he added. "After that we do our camps in June. After that, in July, I give our coaches basi- cally the month of July off within reason. And then we're back to work in August." By the time the team returns to the fields behind the McCue Center, a lot may have changed in terms of positions, slotting and packages. And Mendenhall cautions anyone from jumping to too many conclusions just yet. "Starters are established as we come out of camp before Richmond and they could change week to week," he said. But within a week, the Cavaliers had added former East Carolina quarterback Kurt Ben- kert, who has two years of eligibility remain- ing and can play right away. Needless to say, the competition this fall has now changed significantly. Johns and Brewer, who shared first-team reps this spring, are adjusting as they move away from a pro-style offense. A two-year starter, Johns passed for 2,810 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. But both he and Brewer, who himself transferred to UVA in 2015, are trying to learn the intricacies of of- fensive coordinator Robert Anae's pass-heavy spread attack. That's the same exact offense that Benkert, a 6-3, 225-pound junior, ran when he was with the Pirates the past few seasons. Benkert was named ECU's starter going into last year, Former East Carolina signal-caller Kurt Ben- kert, who has two years of eligibility remain- ing, transferred to UVA in May and will com- pete for the starting job in the fall.
