relay team that placed fifth in 45.21, which was the fifth-best time in school history. "She's coachable," Fetzer said in an un- derstatement. "Not every student-athlete is coachable. God blessed her with talent and ability. Does she do everything right all the time? No. We preach it's a process. "She didn't run perfectly at the ACCs. But she was still able to have success in what she did. And she would be the first one to admit that." Chaney admitted in so many words that she wanted a challenge, which is why she enrolled at Virginia. "I think it was a combination of the uni- versity being a rigorous institution," she said. "I wanted academics and athletics, so UVA was perfect for me." Fetzer didn't hesitate to admit that Chaney was a perfect fit for Virginia. "It takes an individual that's the right fit to be successful at UVA and she is," Fetzer said. "She manages the academic stresses and load. At the same time, she excels on the track. "That's what we recruit. You're trying to find the right fit for UVA and she definitely is the right fit." Right fit or not, Chaney was quick to realize there are only 24 hours in a day and seven days in a week, which presented another challenge. "It took me time to balance the different things in which I'm involved," she said. "What helps me the most is the passion I have for all of it. I'm involved with things I enjoy and that helps me figure out how much time I need. "It's the things I do that help me manage my time the most. If I want to be in different things and perform on the track, I must put forth the work in order to do so." "The perspective she brings and shares with her teammates is critical to life develop- ment," Fetzer said. "She's had some great ups in her career and has had some downs. As a coach that's what you're looking for. Are they mature enough to become better young women when they leave your program? "She's performed incredibly. Has she achieved success on the track? No question about that. But I think she's developed off the track as well. That's what I'm super- proud about." Chaney's ability to perform "incredibly" on the track is due in large part to the tute- lage she's received from Fetzer. "From the technique aspect, Coach Fetzer used to say I ran like a street racer," she said. "I think that was my running on pure talent. I had coaches in high school who showed me how to use the right technique, but I didn't listen. Here, you have to take to time to learn how to run properly. It took a lot of patience on my part. "Mentally, when you're going against other champions you have to train hard to compete against them. You must have that confidence to perform how you should perform. That's something Coach Fetzer taught me." ◆ "She's performed incredibly. Has she achieved success on the track? No question about that. But I think she's devel- oped off the track as well.
