The 2016 spring semester has concluded and many UVA's student-athletes will be entering the summer job market. The UVA Athletics Compliance Office would like to remind VAF members to be aware of the following NCAA and Athletics Compliance Of- fice rules, in the event you hire a student-athlete for a paying job or as a paid/unpaid intern: • The student-athlete and the employer must complete the Stu- dent-Athlete Employment Form and return it to the Compliance Office prior to the start of his or her employment. Please direct the student-athlete to contact the Compliance Office to obtain the form. • The student-athlete must be compensated for work actually performed. Although this seems straightforward, there have been NCAA major infractions at other schools where student-athletes were paid for fictitious jobs. • Compensation is paid commensurate with the going rate in the locality for similar services. • Increased compensation may not be provided to the student-athlete for his or her reputation, fame, or personal following that may have been obtained because of his/her athletics ability. • The employer and employee cannot publicize (or allow for publicity of) the student- athlete's name, image, or picture as an employee; or participate in any form of promotion for the employer (e.g., commercials, brochures, flyers, contests, etc.). If you have any questions about student-athlete employment, please contact the Compli- ance Office at 434/982-5018 or email at athleticscompliance@virginia.edu. As always, thank you for your support and GO 'HOOS! Eric Baumgartner Associate Athletics Director for Compliance COMPLIANCE CORNER SUMMER EMPLOYMENT CAVS FOR LIFE SPOTLIGHT ELIZABETH BRIGHTWELL Former UVA women's golfer Elizabeth Brightwell graduated with her degree in English and French Literature in 2013. She received her master's in Public Policy from the Frank Batten School of Leader- ship and Public Policy in 2014. Brightwell redshirted her first year in a system that often sees first-year student-athletes redshirt as head coach Kim Lewellen likes to see players take their time to develop. "Coach Lewellen encouraged me to redshirt," Brightwell said. "She tends to gravitate towards hard- working people who may need to develop, but also recognizes the academic advantages it can have."
