HOO'S HOT Recognizing the "Who's Hoo" in UVa athletics — Cavalier student-athletes, past, present and future who are making news around the world of sports. Julia Elbaba ◆ Tennis The fourth-year from Oyster Bay, N.Y., was named the recipient of the Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The honor goes to the "Division I women's player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis." Elbaba helped the Cavaliers to their second-ever berth in the NCAA quarterfinals, became the first four-time All-ACC performer in program history, set a new school mark for fourth-years with 37 singles victories and finished her career with a UVA-record 133 singles wins. Filip Mihaljevic ◆ Track and Field The third-year from Bosnia and Herzegovina was named the ACC Outdoor Champi- onships Men's Field Most Valuable Performer after winning his third consecutive discus title with a season-best mark of 62.43 meters, which ranked third in the NCAA at the time. In the process, he helped UVA finish third. He also won the shot put at the conference meet in mid-May, which means he has claimed the last four ACC crowns in the event, indoor and outdoor. The gold medals moved Mihaljevic into a tie with Greg Canty for the most individual ACC titles (seven) in program history. Ryan Shane ◆ Tennis The Falls Church, Va., native led the way for a conference-best six All-ACC selections and helped the No. 1 Cavaliers reach the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons with a win over the nation's top-ranked doubles team. Shane was named the ITA Atlantic Region Senior Player of the Year and Arthur Ashe Award winner for sportsmanship and leadership. After helping UVA defeat Oklahoma in the national title match May 24, he advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA singles championship and fell in his opening match in the doubles competition May 25-30 in Tulsa, Okla. Jimmy Stanger ◆ Golf The third-year from Tampa, Fla., combined with classmate Derek Bard to give UVA a pair of All-ACC honorees, an accomplishment only two other schools could claim. He continued his strong play in the postseason and placed sixth to help lead the nation's No. 26-ranked team to its best single-round and 54-hole tournament score in NCAA regional history. That led the way to a fifth-place finish, which clinched an NCAA Championships bid. Stanger's birdie on the 18th hole broke a tie with No. 23 Washington to give UVA the final berth in the national tournament May 27-June 1 in Eugene, Ore.
