UNDER THE DOME
After Notre Dame's stunning
11-3 upset of Michigan in 1909, it
took 33 years before the two schools
met again.
Then after No. 1 Notre Dame's
35-12 thrashing of the No. 2 Wol-
verines in 1943 en route to the na-
tional title, it took 35 years before
the two powers played again.
This time, after Notre Dame's
31-0 victory in 2014, it took only
three years. The two schools
agreed in June to a two-year deal
in 2018-19.
Michigan will open at Notre
Dame on Sept. 1, 2018, and the
Fighting Irish will reciprocate
with a showdown in Ann Arbor
on Oct. 26, 2019. Notre Dame vice
president and director of athletics
Jack Swarbrick emphasized that
unlike when the two were an-
nual rivals from 1978-2014 except
for two-year hiatuses in 1983-84,
1995-96 and 2000-01, this is an ex-
ception and not a yearly rule in the
rivalry.
The three "untouchables" on the
Irish schedule are USC, Navy and
Stanford, plus the Irish are obli-
gated through at least 2025 to play
four to six Atlantic Coast Confer-
ence teams as part of their agree-
ment with the league while having
full-time status in most every other
sport.

ventory to add another every-year
From 1978-2014, the series between the Irish and
Wolverines was deadlocked 15-15-1. Notre Dame
posted a 31-0 triumph in the last meeting in 2014,
but Michigan leads the all-time series 24-17-1.
