UNDER THE DOME ✦ GIMME FIVE In the 22 football seasons from 1994‑2015, Notre Dame has finished in the Associated Press poll's top 10 only twice: No. 9 in 2005 and No. 4 in 2012. Last year, the Irish came close before season‑ending defeats at Stanford (38‑36) and in the Fiesta Bowl to Ohio State (44‑28) dropped them to 10‑3 and No. 11 in the final rankings. To reach consistent "program" status, a team needs to finish in the top 10 about three times over a five‑year period, including back‑to‑back campaigns. Notre Dame has not had consecutive AP top‑10 finishes since 1992 (No. 4) and 1993 (No. 2, despite defeating No. 1 Florida State that November). Since the inception of the AP poll in 1936, here are the top five streaks at Notre Dame for con‑ secutive AP top‑10 placements: Rk. Number Years 1. 9 1941‑49 2. 7 1964‑70 3. 4 1952‑55 4t. 3 1988‑90 4t. 3 1936‑38 Note: The longest streaks of not finishing in the top 10 were 11 (1994‑2004), followed by seven (1981‑87), and six apiece in 1958‑63 and then 2006‑11.
