4 THE WOLVERINE SEPTEMBER 2016 DON'T FORGET VOLLEYBALL Dear The Wolverine: The volleyball team has Friday and Saturday home matches at Cliff Keen Arena coinciding with the Colorado (including one at 11 a.m., before the football game as well as another in the evening), Penn State and Maryland football games, along with a Saturday- only match after the Illinois game. There are plenty of opportunities for Wolverine fans to attend multiple Wolverine events this fall. Unfortu- nately, there are no road matches to double up with the football team. The schedule makers did bless Michigan with but two home mid- week matches — hooray! — the second being on the evening before Thanksgiving against MSU. Only three times in this millen- nium has our volleyball team not made the NCAA Tournament and this upcoming season should not be the fourth. Starters return at every position led by senior and two-time All-Big Ten middle blocker Abby Cole. Match attendance has increased the last few seasons, with numer- ous sellouts last year, so purchasing tickets in advance would be a very good idea. Go Blue! KEEPING TALENT AT HOME Dear The Wolverine: Imagine, if you will, a new NCAA rule (clearly unlawful) requiring that high school football players play their college ball in their home state. First things first — we and the Spartans would suffer. We need those New Jer- sey/Ohio boys. Iowa, Nebraska, Wis- consin and Minnesota would fall dra- matically — just not enough in-state players. For obvious reasons, Penn State and Pittsburgh would love the new rule. Sadly, like old man river, Ohio State would keep on rolling along. The South would change radically. Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and LSU would fall, with just not enough population. And all eyes would turn to Florida. The fruit is so bountiful there that Miami, Florida and FSU could not absorb all of the players. Each year more than 200 Florida lads obtain Division-I scholarships, so don't be surprised to see Central Florida in the Orange Bowl.
