www.BLUEANDGOLD.com PRESEASON 2016 7 FAN FORUM pid, have knocked Ryan off the front page of every newspaper in America. John Paul White Hemet, Calif. AT A LOSS Every season it seems to me that Notre Dame's offense allows more tackles for loss (TFL) than any other team I watch. I'm not sure if sacks are included in that statistic, but TFL are as dis- ruptive as holding penalties when it comes to drive-killers. Along with its other fine monthly analytics, does BGI have a method for determining the relative damage of TFL to of- fensive efficiency, and hence to win- ning? I suspect the impact is huge. Ronny P. Kaye Via the Internet Mr. Kaye, the rating was not good last year. Notre Dame finished tied for 80th in tackles for loss allowed (which includes sacks) with 6.38 per game. But this is one of those stats that in the overall big picture isn't make or break. Plus, Notre Dame was able to compensate with a plethora of big plays. The 15 touchdowns Notre Dame scored last season that covered 50 or more yards was believed to be a school record. That wasn't going to be make or break, either. Would you believe that national champion Alabama ranked behind Notre Dame in allowing the most tackles for loss during the 2015 sea- son? It was 92nd with a 6.73 aver- age. Another College Football Play- off team, Oklahoma, was 96th (6.85). Context is always important when dealing with stats. Sometimes those tackles for loss on one play can set up a huge gain later. Nevertheless, we will check in with our expert analytics man, Brian Fre- meau, to possibly do a future study on this.
