Quarterback Justin Fields got the com- plete Penn State experience this past weekend. In addition to Saturday's game, the four- star junior from Kenne- saw, Ga., spent time with both the coaching staff and the players. He and his parents were also able to learn the ins and outs of Penn State's campus following a full tour on Sunday. "I got there around noon on Saturday and I was able to eat with the coaches before the game," Fields said. "I met up with Coach [Joe] Moorhead then. I also spoke with Coach [James] Franklin before the game. During the game, I was mainly with their 2018 receiver, Justin Shorter. I was with him pretty much the whole game. "A?er the game, I hung out with a few of their players, Zech McPherson and Shane Simmons. We talked about all kinds of dif- ferent things. It was good to get to know them. On Sunday then, that's when me and my parents took a full tour of the cam- pus. We went through all the academic stuff, as well as the football facilities. We saw basically everything. It was all very nice." While Fields' relationship with the coaching staff will prove to be crucial, it was also important for Penn State to in- troduce him to some of the team's com- mitted players on Saturday. In fact, Shorter was far from the only prospect with whom Fields spoke. "I've been texting with Justin for a while now," Fields said. "I know we texted a lot before the game. He was also texting me a?er the game. We've developed a good friendship. He's an amazing player, but an even better person off the field. "But I have to be honest, their line- backer, Brailyn Franklin, he was definitely the one recruiting me the hardest. He kept saying how much Coach Franklin wanted me. Justin was also saying that, plus how well we could perform together. They both talked to me about some things, but Brai- lyn, he was recruiting me the hardest, for sure. Justin is more laid-back." A?er earning more than a dozen schol- arship offers, Fields narrowed his list to four schools in August: Penn State, North Carolina, Northwestern and Tennessee. He visited North Carolina and Tennessee last month, with an unofficial visit to Northwestern now set for this coming weekend. However, Fields said his trip to Penn State this past weekend raised the bar. "My parents liked it a lot. I would have to say that this visit was probably the best visit I've taken," he said. "My dad, he really liked it. It wasn't just one or two things, ei- ther. He liked everything. I know the aca- demic part was really important. My family cares about that a lot. But also, just how Coach Franklin carries himself. My parents really trust him and what he says. "The only real negative about Penn State is the distance from home, but my parents have already said they're willing to sacri- fice that, especially knowing that I'll get a quality education. For me, I know that I can't base my pick off of that. Finding the right school is what's most important." Following his upcoming visit to North- western, Fields plans to attend games at Tennessee (Sept. 17 vs. Ohio) and North Carolina (Sept. 24 vs. Pitt) one more time. A decision will then likely follow within days or weeks. Fields is a member of the Rivals250 and is also the ninth-ranked dual-threat quar- terback in the Class of 2018.
