He struck out 135 and walked just 41 in 1142 ⁄3 innings, holding opposing hitters to a .176 average. He finished third in the nation and led all freshmen in strikeouts. In the process, he earned consensus first- team All-America and National Freshman Pitcher of the Year honors.
