FROM OUR READERS Everyone in our family did forgive him, however, because he is a mem- ber of our family. It seems like every summer off- season, Wolverine football fans are shocked and disappointed when a team member uses questionable judg- ment and runs afoul of the law. They are part of our Maize and Blue family, and we hate to see them fail at any- thing: miss a tackle, get cited, flunk a class, etc. I admire Coach Hoke for standing firm on the standards of be- havior expected of student-athletes who represent U-M. Some may take issue with those standards, but the responsibilities that come with the privilege of being on the team include being a role model for the younger fans. It's unavoidable. Being a Wolverine varsity athlete is my son a lesson. I would urge my fellow fans to remember that Hoke's players are in their late teens and early twenties. When I was that age, I usually behaved myself, but not al- ways. Even now I do things for which I deserve to have Coach call me in and yell at me. At my age, however, I would embrace the opportunity to be in Michigan Stadium to get a good workout running stairs. Kalamazoo, Mich. sometimes, Lou. It's part of the learning process, and it's tough that it has to be so public, but then again, so is the chance to play football in front of 114,000 fans. Summer just seems to last a bit too long an opportunity to rise to the difficult challenge of showing some class and trying to meet the sometimes unrea- sonable expectations that we Ameri- cans place on our celebrities (patiently signing every autograph, treating ev- ery fan like they are your close friend, etc.). If I had a son on Coach Hoke's team, I would want him to help teach From Our Web Site back and hit Roy Roundtree on the seam. Really wish we'd utilize that play that murdered Notre Dame two years ago, with Denard Robinson, running toward the line faking a rush and then hits the wide-open slot. Don't believe we ran that one time last year. That's something that especially in a first-game situation Denard steps towards the line, then pull back and throw, or a fake to the running back and throw downfield. I think Al Borges is going to try to soften the defense immediately, which we all know 'Bama is going to sell out to stop the run (and more so Denard running). I agree that we did not run the Denard run fake pass play • I think it will be some sort of play action, whether it's the enough last year, and seemingly without good reason. In a fantasy world, I want to see a flea flicker … n8wildey Team 133 began camp today. They all reported, and this is the first day they all came together as 133. Camp will be like Fort Knox. All practices will be closed to • Am I the only one excited here? Is anyone else excited? media (the only info will be selected bits from the official Michigan athletic site, and what comes out of the Big Ten visit, which will also be very selective). Even families will not be allowed at practices (with the exception of the Aug. 25 • First offensive play versus Alabama: Fake read option, step practice, which is the last practice of camp and is a scripted walk through). The O-line is bigger and stronger. The average is over 305- could be deadly. They'll be so amped to stop the run. NawlinsBlue plus — not huge, but getting bigger. This will be the year of Denard, his last year as a Wolverine. It's the same for Big Will Campbell and Craig Roh, to name a few. They have been through a lot, and want to leave with no doubts or questions. The clock is ticking, and time is running down. Monday just helmets, but by the end of the week, full-out football. Go Blue. higbe before Sept. 1. I think defensive line strength and depth. We heard in spring how a couple backups were playing well, like Kenny Wilkins, and hopefully a frosh can be thrown in the mix to add much needed depth at rush end, with Frank Clark's availability up in the air. • Name the one thing you want to hear most out of fall camp kkuipers25 as he is running the ball. I know, a little unrealistic. But even if he's 80 percent as good in the air as he is on the ground, he will basically be unstoppable. The problem with trying to judge line play is that we don't really know it until they get into a game against opponents. We should know if Denard's passing game has increased significantly. If it has, barring injury, he'll be in New York in December, and we'll be in Pasadena in January. andrewhfine SEPTEMBER 2012 THE WOLVERINE 11 • That Denard Robinson is as big of a threat through the air corner of Hoover and South State. Friday and Saturday home matches at Cliff Keen are on the UMass and Northwestern football weekends. There are Saturday matches after the Illinois and MSU games. Tickets should be purchased in advance for the Penn State match, which follows Dear The Wolverine: Volleyball season is just around the VOLLEYBALL REMINDER Lou Hoekstra the MSU football game. Michigan is at OSU the evening before the foot- ball game there. Catching a volley- ball match along with a football game makes for a great, Blue, Michigan day! The volleyball team has experience at every position, yet half of the 14 players are true or redshirt freshmen. Claire McElheny is the only senior. Junior Jen Cross (on the Canadian na- tional team) could set the U-M career blocking record over the next two sea- sons. Sophomore Lexi Dannemiller (four-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week last season and a member of the U.S. national champion A2 team) is on a pace to have the school career setting record in three more years. The Wolverines have made the NCAA Sweet 16 in four out of the last five years. They should be just as good this season. Check 'em out. Jim Supance Tiffin, Ohio falling from the trees, Jim. Thanks for the reminder, regarding a program that has indeed made some nice advances in NCAA competition. Go Blue! You're as reliable as the autumn leaves
