After that victory, the No. 11 Wolfpack moved into the national polls for the first time in school history and proceeded to record a shutout of Wake Forest. The sea- son's lone slip-up, however, came when the Pack fell 7-6 to William & Mary, which en- tered the homecoming contest as a 19-point underdog. To the surprise of everyone, the Wolfpack had a chance to win the conference title on the final day of the season. Two miraculous things allowed that to happen. First, North Carolina beat Duke, which like NC State was undefeated in ACC play. Second, playing against South Carolina in Columbia, the Wolfpack needed one of the most incredible individual performances in the history of college football. Christy scored all of his team's points in the 29-26 victory, including three on a game-winning field goal after the clock had expired. Even though Christy had never attempted a kick in his college career, he knew the best chance for the Wolfpack to win the game was if he tried the 45-yard attempt after South Carolina was called for a defensive penalty.
